Gevolgen voor vrouwen in situaties van oorlog en gewapende conflicten

Inleiding

Conflicten tussen etnische of politieke groeperingen komen steeds vaker voor, waardoor ook meer burgers direct betrokken raken bij het conflict. Vrouwen hebben op verschillende manieren te maken met geweld in de burgeroorlogen en gewapende conflicten.

Omdat de mannen afwezig zijn, krijgen vrouwen een grotere verantwoordelijkheid voor de familie. Veiligheid in het gebied ontbreekt vaak en voedsel en water vinden, wordt bemoeilijkt.

Vrouwen krijgen ook te maken met seksueel geweld. Systematische verkrachting en gedwongen zwangerschap worden als oorlogsstrategie gebruikt. Ook komen vrouwen in gedwongen prostitutie terecht.

Verder worden vrouwen geconfronteerd met verdwenen of overleden familieleden, voornamelijk mannen. Het inkomen valt weg, er zijn meer onzekerheden en er vinden zoektochten naar overlevenden plaats.

Als vrouwen besluiten uiteindelijk te vertrekken uit het oorlogsgebied krijgen zij in vluchtelingenkampen te maken met allerlei problemen die in deze kampen voorkomen. Vrouwen in gevangenschap treffen het vaak slechter dan mannen in gevangenschap. Gevangenissen zijn niet ingericht op seksespecifieke zaken als het verzorgen van kleine kinderen, zwangerschap of persoonlijke hygiëne.

Voor de bovengenoemde problemen is de laatste jaren steeds meer (internationale) aandacht. Op het terrein van internationaal recht zijn er verscheidene resoluties aangenomen.

Geweld tegen vrouwen tijdens oorlogen is een onderdeel van de campagne 'Stop geweld tegen vrouwen' die Amnesty International
